Fire Prevention & By-law Enforcement Officer
This is a full time, permanent position with benefits as per City of Dryden Policy. Salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The Fire Prevention Officer is responsible for coordinating all Fire Prevention Division activities, conducting fire safety inspections, enforcing the Ontario Fire Code and other relevant legislation and standards, coordinating the delivery of public education, conducting plans examination as it relates to fire safety, reviewing special event applications as it relates to fire safety, preparing court documents required for prosecution of fire code violations and investigating the cause and origin of fires.
The Fire Prevention Officer will also be the Municipal Property Standards By-law Enforcement Officer and be responsible for enforcing municipal by-laws and provincial legislation pertaining to the minimum maintenance standards of properties, which require repairs, or general upkeep of the building exterior, interior and yards. This position will ensure occupancy standards including zoning regulations are maintained within residential, commercial, and industrial units and their surrounding yards and conduct investigations, collect and document evidence, issue Orders, notices, inspection reports, attend property standards appeals, testify in court, and participate in community outreach and public relations activities when required.
- Diploma or Degree in Fire Protection Technology or other fire related field is preferred (or equivalent experience or qualifications)
- Minimum five years of experience in fire prevention, inspection, installation, maintenance and/or enforcement or a related field is preferred (or equivalent experience or qualifications)
- Certification as a Fire Inspector I and II, NFPA 1031 (or the ability to acquire within 24 months)
- Certification as a Fire Investigator, NFPA 1033 (or the ability to acquire within 24 months)
- Certification as a Fire and Life Safety Educator I and II, NFPA 1035 (or the ability to acquire within 24 months)
- Having a Building Code Identification Number (BCIN) considered an asset
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code and other related fire protection standards, codes and regulations
- Qualification as a Building Official for conducting fire safety related Building Code Inspections and other related municipal training considered an asset
- Full driver’s license required; DZ endorsement an asset but not required
- Experience training or teaching children or adults or similar training an asset
- Experience interpreting building construction and plans examination considered an asset
- Experience conducting fire inspections and knowledge of fire protection systems
- Experience conducting training and developing programs preferred
- Previous firefighting experience considered an asset but is not required
- Previous by-law enforcement experience considered an asset
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and related software considered an asset
- Exceptional written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
